KINESIO TAPING

Kinesiology Taping is a special form of taping performed with kinesiology tape or kinesio tape, which is a dynamic tape (stretchable tape). This means that the tape does not restrict movement while at the same time providing stability and pain relief. It was first introduced by acupuncturists and chiropractors in Japan in the 1990s, today kinesiology tape is used throughout the world by various health professionals to prevent and treat injuries and pain. Kinesio tape is not just for elite athletes, it has tremendous benefits for regular people as well.

Benefits of kinesio taping

  • improves blood flow

  • improves the slide and glide between tissue layers

  • increases muscle contraction

  • improves proprioception

  • increases lymphatic drainage

  • reduces swelling and bruising

  • decreases the perception of pain.

Other benefits of the particular brand of kinesiology tape that we use at Back to Function called ‘RockTape’ is that it is hypo-allergenic, and water resistant (can be worn for up to 5 days).

How does it work?

When applied correctly by a health professional kinesio tape’s unique elasticity and pattern causes the skin to form convolutions and wrinkle. This decompresses the tissue directly beneath the skin. This is believed to cause three main effects:

  • fluid dynamic effect - increases blood flow and lymphatic flow

  • mechanical effect - improves the slide and glide between tissue layers

  • neurological effect - alters pain perception and improves body awareness

What type of problems can kinesio taping help with?

  • Muscle pain or tightness

  • Joint pain (knee, ankle, shoulder)

  • Joint instability (ankle sprain, post shoulder dislocation)

  • Poor posture (can assist by holding you in proper posture)

  • Inflammation or bruising (blood flow and helps fluid drainage)

A comprehensive evaluation and assessment are necessary in the treatment of any musculoskeletal condition. Dr Adam Gavine has completed several kinesiology taping courses throughout his career and has been using kinesiology tape with great success for over 15 years. Kinesiology tape can be used to treat sports and non-sports injuries, including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee and back pain.

Specific conditions that respond favourably to kinesio taping:

  • Shin splints

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Golfer’s and Tennis elbow

  • Swimmer’s shoulder

  • Rotator cuff injuries

  • Runner’s knee

  • Ankle sprains

  • Back pain

  • Muscle strains and tears

  • Joint inflammation
